Every year, nearly 800,000 Americans suffer a stroke with one occurring every 40 seconds nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. To assist those affected and their caregivers, Franciscan Health Indianapolis, which is ranked No. 1 in Indiana for Stroke Care by Healthgrades for 2024, is hosting a stroke support group on the second Tuesday of the month.

The group is open to those recovering from a stroke or those caring for a stroke survivor. The series of informative group sessions will provide insight from knowledgeable speakers and provide the opportunity to talk with others who are coping with the effects of stroke.

Franciscan medical experts, including physicians, nurses, speech therapists, occupational therapists and social workers will lead each session. There will be a facilitated group discussion following each presentation. In addition, each meeting also includes a group activity.

Upcoming dates and topics include:

May 14: Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) for a discussion about community resources and recreation therapy in stroke recovery

June 11: Container Gardening Day, with Kristen Fagih, teaching attendees how to grow beautiful flowers and vegetables in containers

July 9: Let’s Talk Speech Pathology, with Kayla McConnel, M.A. CCC-SLP, who will share Post-Stroke Changes from Aphasia to Cognition

August 13: Using MyChart: Tips, Tricks, & How-to’s, with Tina Patterson, MSN, RN, Administrative Director, Clinical Informatics and IS Education

The group meets on the second Tuesday of the month from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. in the Franciscan Health Indianapolis Cancer Center Conference Room, located at 8111 S. Emerson Avenue in Indianapolis.
