Roundabout Construction to Begin in Greenwood on July 26
Construction on two key Greenwood roundabouts is set to begin July 26, according to City Community Relations Specialist Ty Hayden.
“Both roundabouts are scheduled to begin July 26th,” Hayden said. “If the utilities are finished being moved before July 26th, we have asked the construction company to start the construction on Woodmen Boulevard as soon as possible.”
The main work will impact Averitt Road and Smith Valley Road, which will be entirely shut down for construction.
“The roundabout at Woodmen Boulevard will be a phased shutdown, maintaining access through to homeowners between Averitt Road and Woodmen Boulevard,” Hayden added.
Motorists traveling between State Road 135 and U.S. 31 are encouraged to use Main Street as the primary detour.
“It allows access to Averitt Road north of the closure,” Hayden said. “Averitt Road south of the closure can be accessed from Worthsville Road coming from 135, or Apryl Drive from US 31. Anyone going to Southwest Elementary or the High School will have to approach from US 31.”
The construction is expected to take about 60 days.
“This does not include minor landscaping and project cleanup, as this can be completed after the road has fully reopened,” Hayden clarified.
Local businesses near the project area will remain accessible during construction.
“The City has been working with them to make sure that access to their business remains accessible to their customers,” Hayden said. “If there are any businesses that are having issues during this time, we have asked them to reach out to us to see what we can do to assist.”
With the timing overlapping with the start of the school year, parents and employers of student workers should plan for delays.
“The City has been working with the Greenwood School Corporation to facilitate this project with as little disruption to school and school activities as possible,” Hayden said. “Student drop off and pick up should continue as normal, though it may take a little longer than usual.”
Hayden emphasized safety and patience as construction gets underway.
“We ask everyone to be patient with the process, and to drive cautiously to avoid accidents and construction workers,” he said. “If you are going to a business in the area, we recommend taking some extra time to compensate for traffic and consider detours when determining your route.”
